EL PAPEL DE LOS COMITÉS DE ÉTICA EN INVESTIGACIÓN EN LA PROTECCIÓN DEL SER HUMANO
El artículo hace una reflexión sobre el término humanización de la medicina y trata de aplicar el concepto a la investigación clínica, en la búsqueda del relacionamiento que considera el respeto a la persona. Caracteriza el papel de los Comités de Ética en la Investigación (CEPs) como control social y cataloga desafíos actuales para una actuación efectiva, en un escenario cada vez más complejo. Finaliza con la presentación de situaciones concretas de la necesidad de proteger a los sujetos de investigación en estudios farmacológicos y trae recomendaciones a los CEPs para un funcionamiento independiente y cumplimiento de su misión de humanización en la relación investigador/institución con los sujetos de estudio.

THE PROTECTIVE ROLE OF RESEARCH ETHICS COMMITTEES FOR HUMAN BEINGS
This paper reflects on the concept of medicine humanization, and attempts to apply this notion to clinical research, looking for a relationship one would assume to be respectful towards another person. It defines the role of Research Ethics Committees (RECs) as one of social control, and provides a list of current challenges to effective action in an increasingly complex environment. Finally, it presents actual examples where the protection of subjects in pharmacological trials is at stake, calling upon RECs to increase their independence and fully pursue their mission of humanizing the relationship between researchers/institutions and research subjects.
